The Speaker’s Circle of the Berlin Coalition of the Independent Arts criticizes the attack on Senator for Culture Joe Chialo in the strongest terms possible. We distance ourselves explicitly from every form of violence and intimidation. Democracy means dialogue, even in cases of differing views.

The public attack on Joe Chialo during the reopening of ZK/U on September 12 as well as the unspeakable attack at the private residence of Berlin’s Senator for Culture are unacceptable and cannot be justified under any circumstances.

We stand in solidarity with Joe Chialo and his family just as we stand for respectful dialogue and interactions, even in cases of conflicting positions. Differences of opinion and disagreements are part of democracy. Violence, no matter whether it is verbal or physical, is the instrument of those who stand against democracy.
